* New foal arrival - Congratulations are in order!
* Formation of the "National Pony Society of America" (NPSA)- an approved area chapter of the NPS in the UK!
* National Highland Pony Stewardship Awards of North America - the first "national" Highland Pony Show in America!

Congratulations goes out to members Sally, Taylor, and Ava Orr of Whitney Creek Ranch
(NPS prefix "Big Coulee") in Montana! Sally reported the arrival of a lovely filly by Lieutenantof Whitefield out of Kenzie of New Skye.
Pictured at left: Kenzie, the new filly and Sally's daughter, Ava.

This filly is the only foal known to be expected for 2008 by our membership. One other foal was born in California earlier this year. If anyone knows of any others, please pass along the information to the Webmaster.

Special Announcement:
In January, The National Pony Society (NPS) in the United Kingdom authorized the formation of a new area chapter. There is now a "National Pony Society America"! Kathryn Rayner Freeman of California is Chairman of NPS America and is undertaking the ENORMOUS task to bring the American populations of British Native Ponies and the British Riding Pony together. Kathryn is an owner/ breeder of Connemaras. Click here to read an article from the NPS America Chairman to find out more of what this new organization is hoping to accomplish. NPS America also has a fledgling web site - www.NPSAmerica.org. The HPECA sends out a big "WELCOME" to the NPSA!

A reminder about our First National Highland Pony Show in North America!
The National Highland Pony Stewardship Awards of North America will be held
as part of the "Festivale of Endangered Breeds" at Kentucky Horse Park, Sept. 5th - 7th, 2008. All Highlands in America are invited to participate in the show on Friday & Saturday, Sept. 5 and 6. Click Here for links to entry forms and information.
Several HPECA members are busy getting ponies and themselves ready for this event to showcase the Highland Pony. The club is going to have a display table and we're collecting photographs to use in a slide show on a laptop. If anyone has pictures they would like to donate, please email Lee Ann. Go to the Events Page for dates and general information about the show, the Festivale, and our 2008 AGM. This is a BIG event for our club!

March 2008
The HPECA has decided the Festivale at KHP will be an excellent opportunity to have our first official Highland Pony Show. This show will be open to ANY Highland Pony owner in America, and quite a few HPECA members are planning to get their ponies to this event. The Highland Pony Society is providing a special rosette for the best over-all Highland Pony. The Equus Survival Trust will be accepting entries from April thru August. There'll be a National Pony Society M&M judge to evaluate the British Native Ponies in both in-hand and performance classes. More details and links on our Events page.

More opportunities are emerging for our members to get their ponies out in the public with the increasing popularity of Mountain & Moorland classes (M&M) in America. Many of the British Native Pony breeds are few and far apart, similar to our own situations. The more prolific breeds - namely Welsh & Connemara - have found it appealing to bring in as many different Native Pony breeds as possible at their events. The Welsh Pony & Cob Society of America is holding authentic M&M classes at their National Shows in California. This provides an excellent opportunity for our west coast members to be able to show their ponies! Click here to read an article from the NPS America Chairman.

Pictured at right (March 2008): Captain Moonlight of Moonshine Glen is a coming four year old stallion, licensed with the HPS (Sire: Clandon Moriarti, Dam: Heidi of Whitefield). He's owned & bred by Jill Mueller of Nevada, who states he's been under-saddle since August 2007 and doing very well.

December 2007
Please Note: The date of the Rare Breed Event at Kentucky Horse Park has changed to September 5 - 7 (Friday thru Sunday). The HPECA will be participating in this event by invitation from the Equus Survival Trust. Several members have already pledged to bring ponies. Anyone interested in attending - either with or without a pony - please contact Lee Ann Bunn, event coordinator for HPECA. Our AGM will be held during this event on Saturday, Sept. 6th. Other things are in the works regarding this event. Keep checking our Events page for updates in the coming year!

PEOPLE & PONIES: Many were out enjoying their ponies Fall 2007...
Members George & Cameron Clardy with their Highland Pony driving pair,
Heath of New Skye and Carnegie of New Skye (pictured below), participated in the Brandywine Valley Driving Club's "Teddy Bears Picnic" in November 2007. They successfully completed Dressage, Cones, and Marathon stages of the event & had a wonderful day with the ponies.

Member Lee Ann Bunn & Highland Pony friend, Kellwould Tilly (pictured at right), spent a week trail riding with friends along the South Anna River in Louisa County, VA . It was Tilly's first serious riding out with diverse terrain & many obstacles. Lee Ann & Tilly both had a wonderful time seeing some very lovely countryside.

Members Leif Erickson, Debbie Coburn, and Andrea Martel with ponies, Circle H Glengarry, Kerrera Jeanie, & Sharian Primrose (respectively) participated in several long distance, group trail rides in N.H. All had a very good time enjoying the camaraderie of both ponies & people. Pictured below: Andrea & Primrose try to determine which way to go next??!

Members! Send a picture and let us know what you're up to! We'll post it on the "news" page.

The Equine Journal & Highland Pony Article
The HPECA submitted an article about the Highland Pony to the Equine Journal & it will be appearing in the November issue, All Breed, All Discipline Supplement. The article is part of the HPECA's affiliation with the Equus Survival Trust. Each year we will have the opportunity to submit an article about Highland Ponies & have an advertisement for the club (View HPECA members' benefits as part of this affiliation).

Website GO-LIVE!
Our Website, www.hpeca.org, is LIVE! Members can provide any news of their activities to our Webmaster, Lee Ann Bunn. Classifieds & advertisements from our club newsletter will be included on our site. Pictures of your ponies will always be welcome! If sending a picture, please state who took the picture and anyone in the picture (including ponies!). This information will be included along with any picture we post. Make sure to get permission if you did not take the picture yourself.

New Club Treasurer
It is with regret that we announce the retirement of our Treasurer, Nadine Bunn. Nadine was one of our founding members & was instrumental in getting our paper-work filed for our non-profit status. She dedicated herself to maintaining the club's finances & records for the last 3 years. Her daughter, Lee Ann, will take over Treasurer duties until a permanent Treasurer can be appointed. Please make all checks for club dues out to HPECA and mail to: Lee Ann Bunn - Treasurer, 181 Tater Lane, Bumpass, VA. 23024. Thank you.
